AMS 4616
Silicon Iron Bronze, AMS 4616 / UNS C65620, is primarily for anti-friction bearing cages. Our Silicon Iron Bronze is controlled and tested for both grain size and hardness. It is 100% UT tested, and from a D.F.A.R.S. qualified mill.
Details
Silicon Iron Bronze, commonly known as AMS 4616, is an excellent source for anti-friction bearing cages, races, and spacers. It’s a special high strength silicon bronze with additional iron content that provides added strength in conjunction with the self lubricant of the silicon for excellent bearing and load properties.
We stock solid bar from 5/8″ to 4 1/2″ and machine blanks from 4 1/2″ to 18″.
We also produce finished machined retainers:
- Ball Bearing – Completed Cages
- Roller Bearing – Completed Cages
- Split Retainers – Completed Cages
We are proud to say that we are the largest stocking distributor of AMS 4616 in the world.
Available shapes – round and sleeve
Why Engineers Choose Silicon Iron Bronze for Bearing Components
In high-speed or high-load systems, bearing components must resist wear while maintaining stable mechanical performance. That’s where silicon iron bronze stands out. The alloy combines the natural lubricity of silicon with added iron content, giving engineers a material that balances strength, durability, and reliable sliding characteristics.
These qualities make the alloy especially effective in rotating equipment where friction and contact pressure remain constant concerns. When cages and retainers maintain their shape under load, the entire bearing system runs more consistently. That stability helps reduce premature wear on surrounding components and supports longer operational cycles in demanding environments.
Material Strength and Wear Resistance
One of the most important advantages of this alloy is its ability to support mechanical integrity under stress. Silicon iron bronze offers excellent resistance to deformation, allowing components to retain dimensional accuracy during operation.

This strength becomes particularly valuable in industries such as aerospace and heavy industrial equipment. Components often face high rotational speeds, vibration, and repeated load cycles. Materials that combine toughness with anti-friction characteristics help prevent galling and excessive surface wear.
When produced to AMS 4616 specifications, the alloy meets strict standards for composition and performance. Engineers often rely on this designation when designing parts that must perform predictably in critical assemblies.
Reliable Performance in Rotating Systems
Rotating equipment places constant pressure on bearing cages and retainers. Materials used in these positions must support rolling elements while maintaining structural integrity over long operating periods.
Silicon iron bronze performs well in these conditions because it distributes load effectively and resists surface scoring. Its balanced composition allows parts to run smoothly alongside steel rolling elements without creating excessive friction.
In high-speed bearing systems, this combination of strength and lubricity contributes to improved stability.
Machinability and Manufacturing Flexibility
Another benefit of AMS 4616 is its machinability. The alloy responds well to common machining operations, allowing complex bearing components to be produced with tight tolerances.
Machinists often work with this material when producing:
- Precision bearing cages
- Custom retainers
- Spacer components
- Specialized aerospace hardware
Its predictable cutting characteristics help maintain dimensional accuracy while reducing the risk of tool wear or surface defects. Materials that machine consistently make it easier to achieve the exact geometry needed for rotating assemblies.
Consistency Matters in Critical Applications
Material consistency plays a major role in how components perform. Variations in hardness, grain structure, or composition can lead to uneven wear patterns or unexpected mechanical behavior.
Alloys that meet AMS 4616 standards undergo strict controls to ensure dependable performance. For engineers designing systems that rely on precision bearing components, this level of consistency supports both safety and operational reliability.
When selecting materials for bearing cages, guides, or rotor assemblies, silicon iron bronze continues to serve as a trusted choice across multiple industries. Its unique balance of strength, wear resistance, and machinability allows engineers to build components that perform reliably in demanding mechanical systems.
